I first heard about Maria Montessori when I was ten years old. My mother was completing her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education and was taken by the Montessori philosophy. She would quote Maria Montessori around her family quite often. Because of this, it did not surprise me that years later I became enamored with the same philosophy. I was born and raised in Evanston, Illinois and came to the Twin Cities area to study at Macalester College. I graduated from college in 1982 with a B.A. in Literature. During my time at Macalester, I also studied abroad in Southern France and also lived in Paris for more than a month. The desire to travel is still strong within me and feeds me as a globally aware citizen and Montessori teacher. After having a child and working a day care business out of my home, I decided to go back to school and get my state license to teach grades K-8th. The same year, I also received a Master’s Degree in Education at the College of St. Catherine. Two years ago, I was given the opportunity to work full time as a classroom teacher at J.J. Hill Montessori. I had been a long-term substitute teacher and also a specialist in the building. I received Montessori training at Midwest Montessori Teacher Training Center in Illinois and have been working in my own Elementary I classroom ever since. J.J. Hill has a wonderful and deserved reputation. I feel blessed to be doing my job with such a caring community of people.
